The Worst (kind of) of 2018: Ant Man and the Wasp
A review by Brooks Rich
OK so Ant Man and The Wasp is nowhere near the real worst of 2018. It's not a bad movie per say but personally as a Marvel film it just feels kind of slight to me. It's in the most disappointing of 2018 to be sure. I enjoyed the film as I watched it because of course I did. Marvel can entertain during the immediate moment. But as I reflected on it I just found it to be mediocre and next to Alpha one of the worst trailers of the year. Every beat in storytelling and action is shown in the trailer. Why do we do this? Marvel needs to just have a black screen with the title and the date of release. That's their trailer. Everyone is going to see it. It's the MCU. It's the immediate follow up to Infinity War. But nope, let's show everything. This is a big problem that dilutes the film. It's the equivalent of giving away a fantastic scare in a horror movie or a big laugh in a comedy.
It's a shame because the action set pieces are fun here and Paul Rudd is so good as the lovable Ant Man. But something just doesn't work for me here. I find the story to be kind of thin and I didn't really care about the relationship between our heroes and the villains. I love Walton Goggins and thinks he deserves to be in far more then he is but I thought he was just kind of silly here.
Overall it's just kind of ok, not really, that didn't impact me like some of the other Marvel single hero films. All of the MCU heroes have struggled with their immediate sequels save for Captain America who actually got better with each sequel. Ant Man and the Wasp falls into the sequel trap and can't live up to it's predecessor.
