The Worst of 2018: Mute
A review by Azzam Abdur-Rahman
Duncan Jones… Duncan Jones.. Do y’all remember what it was like when Moon came out? We felt like this was the second coming. We finally had found a director to take Sci-Fi into the modern age with a love for what made it great in the 70’s and 80’s. Just as we thought it couldn’t get better he would drop Source Code, a film that could have easily been a terrible studio film bettered by his direction. Then it all changed. We got Warcraft but we always had hope Mute would be a return to form. A sudo-sequel to Moon taking place in the same universe. What we got was probably one of the most offensive movies I have ever seen in my adult life. Now, to be clear I am not normally someone who calls a film offensive. A film can be bad and still be enjoyable. It can still have something to say or it can have performance of note but this is an example of an abject waste of time covered in a film of dirt that makes me wonder if Moon and Source Code were just two lucky hits out to bat. The main character makes zero sense and him being mute does nothing for the story at all. Paul Rudd is unwatchable which is hard to imagine. Justin Theroux plays a pedophile for what reason I have zero clue and most of all it has ZERO REASON TO BE SCI-FI!! Nothing about its setting adds anything to the story just like being Mute. This is a perfect example of a film that probably needed a strong producer to shut these weird choices down. Netflix could be a hub for great films that studios won’t risk on but Mute wasn’t the one. 0/5
